Eligibility Criteria for MBBS

To be eligible for MBBS admission in India, you must meet the following criteria:

1.     Age: You must be 17 years old or above on or before December 31st of the year in which you plan to apply for MBBS.

2.     Educational Qualification: You must have passed 10+2 or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English as main subjects. You should have obtained a minimum of 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology combined.

3.     National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET): To get admission in MBBS in India, you must clear the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). NEET is the only medical entrance exam in India and is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA).

1.     Register for NEET: The first step in the MBBS admission process is to register for the NEET exam. You can do this by visiting the official website of NTA. The registration process usually starts in the month of December and the exam is conducted in May.

2.     Prepare for NEET: Once you have registered for the NEET exam, you need to start preparing for the exam. You can find NEET study material and mock test papers online, or you can join a coaching institute.

Direct admission in MBBS 

In India, Karnataka is the No. 1 state for direct admission in MBBS.

Admission to  Medical Colleges in Karnataka is offered through NEET.
Unlike other states, Karnataka offers direct admission in MBBS to even just qualified students in the NEET exam.

It has many unique features, including:

    • This state has much more medical colleges and seats than the rest of the country (all over India).

To apply for direct admission in MBBS at Karnataka  2022 students will have to visit the official website (kea.kar.nic.in) for Karnataka’s counseling, submit the online application form, and undergo a document verification process


It is not possible to get direct admission to MBBS without NEET in Karnataka. Only NEET Exam qualified candidates are eligible for direct admission in MBBS at Karnataka. 

Karnataka direct MBBS admission Eligibility Criteria 2022:

  •   The candidate must have passed Physics, Chemistry, and Biology / Biotechnology in Class 12 as compulsory subjects with English as a mandatory subject.
  • The candidate must have passed the NEET Exam.
  •  Candidates must have completed 17 years as of December 31 of the year.
  • General candidates must obtain a minimum score of 50 percent in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology; SC/ST candidates must achieve a minimum score of 40 percent.


 MBBS Admission through the management Quota 

For medical studies, Karnataka is regarded as the ideal state. Due to the fact that its facilities are not only for local students but also for students from other states, it is one of the most popular sites for students from other states.

 MBBS Admission through the Management quota is completely legal in the country. 

  NEET is a mandatory exam for admission to any medical college.

 Even though it is possible to get MBBSAdmission through the management quota with a very low score or by just qualifying for the exam, it is not possible without NEET.  

Students who want to take MBBS Admission through the management quota in Karnataka must participate in KEA counseling (kea.kar.nic.in).   

The vacant seats in the NRI/Open quota are later transferred to the management quota. The fees for these seats are decided according to the circumstances.

Parents should plan 1 crore for 4.5 years (total package). You will have to pay 20% of the package at the time of admission and the remaining 80% can be paid in installments.


MBBS Admission through the Management Quota allows students to get into top private institutions. In terms of admission, there is no difference between students admitted through merit and those admitted through the management quota.

NEET (National eligibility entrance test)


If you wish to become a doctor, you must take the NEET test, which is administered by NTA (NATIONAL TESTING AGENCY) in 13 languages in offline (pen and paper mode). The exam is held once a year. Several languages are available for the NEET questions, including English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu.

A NEET score is necessary for admission to medical colleges.

There are 2 types of NEET exams

  •       NEET-UG: MBBS, BDS......etc.
  •       NEET-PG: MD, MS
                 

 NEET-UG:

After completing 12th grade, NEET-UG is an undergraduate course taken by students who wish to take undergraduate courses in medicine (MBBS), dentistry (BDS), or AYUSH (BAMS, BUMS, BHMS, etc.) at public and private institutions.

 NEET-PG:

 NEET-PG is designed to prepare students for postgraduate courses like Doctor of Medicine (MD), Master of Surgery (MS), and diploma courses at public or private medical colleges. The exam is conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE).

EXAM PATTERN:- 

There are a total of 180 MCQs on the exam, 45 questions each from Physics, Chemistry, Biology (Botany/Zoology). Every correct answer gets 4 points and every wrong answer gets a -1 negative rating. The duration of the exam is 3 hours (180 minutes). The exam is of 720 marks. 

Syllabus:- 

NEET (UG) syllabus consists of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology concepts taught in classes 11 and 12 prescribed by NCERT.

MD/MS admission in Nepal is conducted through Medical Education Commission Entrance Examination (MECEE).

firstly, let me clear to you that qualifying for NEET-PG is compulsory for direct MD/MS admissions as well. 

 A doctor can only apply for management quota admission if he or she is eligible to apply for the NEET. Direct admission begins in the last round known as the mop-up round. Those who score high on NEET-PG will be invited to the first three rounds.

The National Board of Examinations (NBE) conducts the NEET-PG exam once a year in computer-based mode.


❓Is it possible to get admission through the management quota?

  • One can apply for medical seats through the management quota but he will be able to get the seat through the stray vacancy counseling. Direct admission in PG medical is practicable as after completing all the rounds of counseling, a maximum no. of seats remain empty in private and deemed universities which are later allotted to the students.

It is reassuring to know that one can obtain direct admission to MD/MS programmes through the management quota if he/she passes the entrance exam with the minimum required score.

 In comparison with students who obtain a seat through general counseling, the management quota course fees are higher.  


Eligibility Criteria for direct admission in MD MS:

  • An MBBS degree with a minimum of 50% marks must be obtained from an institution recognized by the Medical Council of India.

  • Candidates must have completed their mandatory rotational internship by April 31 of the relevant year.

  • Qualifying for the NEET-PG Exam
  • NEET-PG applications do not have an upper or lower age limit. NEET has not specified an age limit for candidates, so any candidate who meets the other eligibility requirements can apply.

    The candidate has to secure a minimum of 50% for the general category and 40-45% for SC/ST/OBC and PWD categories.
    If we consider the NEET-PG 2021(last year) marks it was 302 for general category whereas for SC/ST/OBC/PWD categories it was 265 out of 800 marks.
